‘Christian Dior: Designer of Dream’ – 2019’s Recognition of Fashion Art
What do you love most about your surroundings? Do you sit back and imagine having a legacy of what YOU, find exquisite being celebrated years to come, from generation to generation? Well, it could be a yes, a no, or you really haven’t yet identified what you adore most about your surroundings, your country. One Peter Strople said “Legacy is not leaving something for people. It’s leaving something in people”. Now, as we appreciate art in our world, one man whose legacy basically lives in us, especially in the world of fashion art, Christian Dior (21st Jan 1905 – 24th Oct 1957) is being celebrated as an artistic fashion legend.
Christian Dior, best known as the founder of the world’s top fashion houses, also called ‘Christian Dior’, was a man who appreciated his surroundings so much. And with that, he left the fashion industry with some of his ‘Dior’ style, which plays a great part in the Fashion industry. “There is no other country in the world, besides my own, whose way of life I like so much. I love English Traditions, English politeness, English architecture. I even love English cooking” – Christian Dior.
Every so often, a fashion exhibition takes place in the museum world – a reminder to the public, of the clothing’s role in the history of art making. While so many are marked with existing fashion art pieces, I can’t think of any that can out do the ongoing fashion exhibition, ‘Christian Dior: Designer of Dream’ 2019.It opened on 2nd February at the Victoria & Albert museum, with the intention to be showcased until the 19th of July 2019, but ended up being extended to 1st Sept 2019.
What is so interesting about this fashion art exhibition?
Well, it is the largest exhibition on the French fashion house ever staged in the UK. Currently ongoing, the exhibition charts the brand's history from 1947 to the present day, celebrating the life and works of Christian Dior and his six artistic successors, presenting over 500 pieces and 200 couture garments drawn from the V&A couture collection, alongside accessories, fashion photography, film, vintage perfume, original make-up, illustrations, magazines, and Christian Dior’s personal possessions. The exhibition which is divided into 11 sections, explores the late designer’s fascination with the British culture and his creative collaborations with British manufactures such as Mitchel Maer (Costume Jewellery). Some of Dior’s pieces that will be showcasing during this period were worn by Princess Margaret, ballet dancer Margot Fonteyn and actress Jennifer Lawrence.
This must see Christian Dior exhibition is the museum's biggest fashion exhibition since the ‘Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty’ exhibition in 2015. Since the tickets are sold out, very limited extra tickets will be released on a monthly basis, for the month ahead, to be purchased daily at 10am from the Grand Entrance, on a first-come, first-served basis.
