Art Index: Jenny Holzer
Born in Gallipolis (Ohio) in 1950, Jenny Holzer studied at Ohio University in Athens and the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. In 1977 she moved to New York, where she currently lives. Here, she attended the Independent Studies program at the Whitney Museum of American Art and undertook her research focused on language.
Jenny Holzer is a neo-conceptual artist. She lives in Hoosick Falls, New York. The key points of her work are the distribution of words and ideas in public spaces. Holzer belongs to the feminist branch of the generation of artists who emerged in the 1980s.
In 1995, in conjunction with the expansion of the web, she created her first interactive project for the web, making some of her most famous Truisms editable by the user: words on paper to be spread around the city. In 1979, she joined the group of artists Colab (including Basquiat), with whom she shares a preference for urban and metropolitan places as a widespread dissemination of her work, as opposed to traditional art structures now felt inadequate (galleries, museums, magazines). Throughout her career she has exhibited in museums such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim in New York, whose truisms retraced the entire internal spiral of the building (1989), the Centre Pompidou in Paris (1996), the Museum of Modern Art (1997), the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York (1999), the Oslo Museum of Contemporary Art (2000), and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin (2001). In 1990, she represented the American Pavilion at the 44th Venice Biennale, winning the Golden Lion with Venice installation, truisms sculpted on tombstones. In 2004, Holzer received the Public Art Network Award in his homeland.
The most recent arrival of her artistic research is constituted by xenon projections: presented for the first time in Florence in 1996, in these works the luminous phrases form long texts that flow on urban surfaces, assuming new connotations of great visual suggestion.
