Grants, Prizes, and Open Calls for Artists This Week

At this stage of the application cycle, the focus shifts from browsing to decision-making. Many of the most relevant opportunities are already open, and the value now lies in choosing selectively rather than applying broadly. Each application requires time, clarity, and intention, so it becomes important to align opportunities with your current priorities.

This week’s selection brings together a mix of exhibition, funding, and recognition-based formats. There is a fair that offers direct engagement with collectors, a painting-focused award built around discipline-specific recognition, a grant program providing unrestricted financial support, and an institutional pathway designed for longer-term exhibition planning.

These opportunities are not interchangeable. Some are built for visibility and sales, others for funding and stability, and a few for long-term positioning within institutional frameworks. Understanding what each one offers allows you to approach the process more strategically.

Take the time to review each option carefully and focus on the ones that genuinely support your next step.

Read through and find the one that aligns best with your current direction:

Clio Art Fair is now accepting applications for its 24th and 25th editions, taking place September 17–20 and September 24–27, 2026 in New York. The fair is designed for independent artists, particularly those without exclusive gallery representation, offering direct access to collectors, curators, and the public during a key moment in the art calendar.

Exhibition spaces start at 5 feet and can scale depending on the scope of the presentation. Artists can choose between three participation tiers. Gold focuses on visibility through promotion, Platinum adds support such as art handling and storage, and Diamond includes on-site dealers who assist with sales.

The program also includes a performance section for live and time-based works, expanding beyond traditional exhibition formats. The Early Bird deadline is May 29, 2026, waiving the $50 application fee.

The International FiKVA Award is a focused opportunity for painters working within representational and figurative practices. Open to artists worldwide, it accepts a wide range of styles including realism, hyperrealism, and surrealism, as long as the work remains grounded in representation.

The competition is fully online, allowing artists to submit high-quality images without shipping or parting with their work. This removes logistical barriers while maintaining access to an international platform.

The award offers up to €5,500 in cash prizes, along with additional benefits such as art supplies, online exhibition opportunities, and six-month gallery representation for selected artists. Finalists and winners also receive continued visibility through features and promotion.

Eligibility is limited to works created between 2024 and 2026 using traditional painting media, making it particularly suited for artists with a recent and cohesive body of work.

3. The Hopper Prize: $4,500 & $1,000 Artist Grants

Location: International

Application Deadline: May 12, 2026

The Hopper Prize offers a combination of direct financial support and long-term visibility. A total of 13,000 USD is awarded across multiple grants, including two larger awards and four additional grants. All funding is unrestricted, allowing artists to use it in any way that supports their practice.

The program is open to artists working in all media, with no restrictions on subject or approach. This flexibility makes it accessible to a wide range of practices and career stages.

Beyond funding, the prize emphasizes ongoing exposure. Selected artists are featured across the platform’s archive, editorial content, and online channels, ensuring continued visibility beyond the application cycle. Even shortlisted artists benefit from this exposure.

This makes it a strong option for artists looking to combine financial support with sustained international visibility.

4. Maria V. Howard Arts Center Exhibition Proposals

Location: Rocky Mount, North Carolina

Application Deadline: Ongoing

Text over a colorful paint-splattered background reads: “Maria V. Howard Arts Center, Exhibition Proposals, Deadline Ongoing, Apply Now.”

The Maria V. Howard Arts Center offers an ongoing opportunity for artists to submit proposals for solo, group, and travelling exhibitions. Unlike short-term open calls, this program operates on a longer timeline, with exhibitions scheduled several years in advance.

This structure allows artists to build sustained exhibition visibility within an institutional setting. The center also places emphasis on community engagement and education, meaning selected artists often participate in a broader cultural program beyond the exhibition itself.

Applications require a well-developed proposal, including a cohesive body of work, an artist statement, and supporting materials. Submissions are reviewed with consideration for both artistic quality and program fit.

This opportunity is best suited for artists interested in long-term positioning and institutional collaboration.

Not every opportunity will move your work forward in a meaningful way. The most effective applications come from clarity, not volume. Understanding what you need at this stage allows you to focus on opportunities that offer real value rather than general exposure.

Whether you are aiming to present work publicly, secure funding, or build longer-term relationships, the approach should remain consistent. Apply with intention, be selective with your time, and treat each submission as part of a broader direction.
