Finding the right opportunity can shift the direction of an artist’s practice in very different ways.
For some artists, the next step is about visibility: getting work in front of collectors, curators, and new audiences. For others, it is about research, time, and the ability to develop a project slowly and with intention. And sometimes, the most valuable opportunity is one that allows an artist to engage deeply with a place, history, or community while creating something new.
This week’s selection brings together three distinct opportunities across exhibition, residency, and research-based practice.
Clio Art Fair is preparing for its September 2026 editions in Chelsea, New York, with the fair dates now approaching and only limited exhibition availability remaining. The Erie Canal Museum is offering a year-long Artist-in-Residence program focused on the history, present condition, and future of the New York State Canal System. In Finland, Arteles Creative Center is inviting artists and creative
thinkers to explore artificial intelligence, future societies, human transformation, and other emerging ideas through its Neo Future residency.
These opportunities are very different in structure, location, and purpose, but each asks artists to think carefully about how they want their work to develop.
Before applying, consider what your practice needs most right now: public exposure, sustained research, engagement with history and place, or uninterrupted time to experiment with new ideas.
Here are three opportunities currently open to artists and creative practitioners.
1. Clio Art Fair — September 2026 Editions

Clio Art Fair is entering the final stages of preparation for its September 2026 editions, with only a few exhibition spaces remaining for independent artists interested in presenting their work in Chelsea.
The fair will return for two consecutive editions:
September 17–20, 2026 | 24th Edition
September 24–27, 2026 | 25th Edition
Known as the “Anti-Fair for Independent Artists,” Clio Art Fair is centered on artists working without exclusive gallery representation and gives participants the opportunity to present their work directly to collectors, curators, art professionals, and the public.
Artists working across painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, mixed media, installation, digital art, new media, video, printmaking, design, and other contemporary practices are encouraged to apply.
Applications are reviewed by Clio Art Fair’s curatorial board, with exhibition options beginning at five linear feet of wall space.
With the September editions now approaching and participating artists continuing to secure their spaces, availability is becoming increasingly limited.
Invited artists can apply through the VIP invitation link and save the standard $50 application fee through August 17, 2026.
For artists who already have a developed body of work and are looking for greater visibility in New York, this may be one of the final opportunities to join the September program.
2. Erie Canal Artist-in-Residence
Location: New York State / Hybrid Research-Based Residency
Organizer: Erie Canal Museum in partnership with the New York State Canal Corporation

Application Deadline: September 6, 2026
Residency Period: January 1–December 31, 2027
The Erie Canal Museum, in partnership with the New York State Canal Corporation, is seeking two artists for a year-long Artist-in-Residence program focused on the New York State Canal System.
The residency invites artists to explore the Canal’s past, present, and future through a sustained creative project that responds directly to its physical, environmental, social, and historical context.
While artists from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply, special consideration will be given to artists with ancestral ties to the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and/or Mohican Nation, as well as artists who live or work in New York State Canal communities.
Applicants must propose a specific visual project that can ultimately be presented in a gallery exhibition. Projects may focus on one particular section of the Canal or engage with the larger system, which includes approximately 524 miles of navigable waterways and 365 miles of multi-use trails.
Selected artists will be expected to engage with Canal communities, visitors, museum and Canal Corporation staff, facilities, and the surrounding landscape as part of their research.
Each selected artist or artist collective will receive a $10,000 stipend.
Applications should include a statement of interest and project proposal, an artist statement, résumé or CV, two professional references, and ten recent work samples.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old and may not be enrolled in school full-time. Individual artists and artist collectives may apply, though collectives will share one stipend.
The residency begins January 1, 2027, and concludes December 31, 2027, with the resulting exhibition scheduled for the first half of 2028.
3. Neo Future — Thematic Residency in Finland

Arteles Creative Center is accepting applications for Neo Future: Shifting into New Realities, a two-week thematic residency in Finland focused on imagining what may come next.
The program is designed for artists, thinkers, researchers, designers, technologists, and other creative practitioners interested in subjects that move beyond familiar ideas about society, consciousness, and human experience.
Themes may include artificial intelligence, expanded consciousness, human transformation, future societies, singularity, emerging technologies, and realities that do not yet have established names or categories.
Rather than expecting participants to arrive with a clearly defined final outcome, Neo Future emphasizes exploration, experimentation, and process.
The residency brings together ideas from art, science, philosophy, design, technology, and unconventional forms of knowledge, encouraging participants to question existing assumptions and follow new lines of inquiry.
Taking place from December 3–18, 2026 at Arteles Creative Center in Hämeenkyrö, Finland, the program offers a concentrated period for research and creative development within an international and transdisciplinary environment.
It may be particularly relevant for practitioners whose work is speculative, experimental, research-driven, technology-focused, or concerned with how human life and culture could change in the future.
For artists interested in moving outside established artistic categories and exploring questions without requiring immediate answers, Neo Future offers a space where uncertainty itself can become part of the creative process.
What Does Your Practice Need Right Now?
These three opportunities support artistic development in very different ways.
Clio Art Fair is the most immediate and public-facing. It is best suited to artists who already have work ready to exhibit and want to engage directly with audiences, collectors, and art professionals in New York.
The Erie Canal Artist-in-Residence program offers a much longer period of research and development. It asks artists to engage deeply with history, geography, community, and the physical landscape of the Canal system, making it particularly relevant for artists interested in place-based practice, public history, ecology, social research, and cultural narratives.
Neo Future offers yet another structure. Rather than centering a specific site or finished exhibition, it gives artists the opportunity to explore emerging questions about technology, consciousness, future societies, and human transformation within a short but concentrated residency environment.
When deciding whether to apply, think beyond the deadline.
Ask yourself what kind of opportunity would genuinely support your work at this moment. Do you need an audience for work that is already complete? Do you need a longer period to investigate a complex subject? Or do you need a temporary shift in environment to experiment with ideas that are still forming?
It is also worth considering the practical side of each opportunity: location, time commitment, financial support, travel requirements, required materials, and whether the structure matches the way you actually work.
A strong application is usually not just about demonstrating that you are qualified. It is about showing why your practice and the opportunity make sense together.
The most useful opportunity is the one that gives your work the right conditions to grow in the direction you want to take next.
