Open Calls That Actually Fit the Moment

Artists spend a lot of time searching for the “right” opportunity, but the better question is often: what does your practice need right now?
Some opportunities are built for visibility and direct audience engagement. Others create space for experimentation, funding, or long-term cultural contribution. The strongest applications usually happen when artists stop applying broadly and start applying strategically.
This week’s selection brings together three very different opportunities: a process-driven experimental exhibition, a major New York art fair focused on independent artists, and a substantial grant supporting projects connected to Hungarian American culture.
Read through and find the one that aligns best with your current direction:
1. Maryland Federation of Art: At Play 2026
Location: Annapolis, Maryland, United States
Dates: May 27, 2026
Exhibition Dates: August 14 – October 14, 2026
The Maryland Federation of Art is currently accepting submissions for At Play 2026, a virtual exhibition centered around experimentation, curiosity, and artistic freedom.
Rather than focusing on polished outcomes or rigid themes, this open call encourages artists to submit work created through exploration and instinct. The exhibition is interested in the moments where process overtakes perfection — where artists allow themselves to make without overexplaining or overcontrolling the result.
The opportunity is open to artists living in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with no restrictions on medium. Artists may submit up to six works created within the past three years.
Selected works will be exhibited through MFA’s Virtual Gallery, with cash awards totaling $500 presented by juror Gage Branda, a Filipino-American artist and educator whose interdisciplinary practice spans sculpture, biodesign, and experimental forms.
For artists interested in process-based work, experimentation, and conceptual freedom, this exhibition offers a refreshing alternative to more commercially driven open calls.
2. Clio Art Fair - September 2026
Location: New York City Dates: September 17–20, 2026 & September 24–27, 2026
Early Bird Deadline: May 29, 2026

Clio Art Fair has officially opened applications for its September 2026 editions in Chelsea, Manhattan. Known for supporting independent artists, collectives, artist-run spaces, and emerging dealers, the fair continues to position itself outside the traditional commercial art fair structure.
Held during New York’s busy fall art season, Clio provides artists with direct exposure to collectors, curators, press, and art professionals in one of the most active contemporary art markets in the world.
The fair accepts a wide range of media including painting, photography, sculpture, installation, performance, digital work, video, sound, mixed media, and comics. Participation options range from Gold to Diamond plans depending on the level of support and visibility artists are seeking.
For artists looking to build audience engagement, expand professional networks, and exhibit in New York within an artist-focused environment, Clio remains one of the more accessible and strategically positioned fair opportunities available.
3. Tulipán Foundation: Art & Culture Award
Location: Online / United States
Deadline: May 30, 2026
Grant Amount: Up to $15,000
The Tulipán Foundation Art & Culture Award supports artists and cultural practitioners whose work engages with Hungarian American culture in meaningful and contemporary ways.
Open to artists across all disciplines — including visual arts, performance, literary arts, multimedia, folk traditions, and curatorial projects — the award encourages proposals that preserve, reinterpret, or creatively expand conversations around Hungarian culture within the United States.
Unlike many restrictive grants, the funding is flexible and may support project expenses, research, travel, production, or living costs connected to the proposed work. Applicants must submit a clear project proposal and budget outlining how the award would contribute to both their artistic practice and the broader cultural community.
The program is open to emerging, mid-career, and established artists who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and who demonstrate a strong commitment to Hungarian American cultural engagement.
For artists working between cultural preservation and contemporary practice, this grant offers both substantial financial support and meaningful institutional recognition.
The best opportunity is rarely the one with the biggest name. It is the one that meets your practice where it currently is.
If your work needs experimentation and freedom, At Play offers space for that.
If your focus is visibility and professional exposure, Clio creates direct access to audiences and industry networks.
If your work is rooted in cultural dialogue and long-term development, the Tulipán Foundation award provides meaningful support and funding.
The strongest applications come from clarity. Know what your work needs, then apply accordingly.
