RECASTING THE PAST: THE ART OF CHINESE BRONZES, 1100-1900
@THE MET FIFTH AVENUE 28 FEB - 28 SEPT 2025 Chinese bronzes made from the 12th to the 19th century are an important but often overlooked category of Chinese art. In ancient China, bronze vessels were emblems of ritual and power. A millennium later, in the period from 1100 to 1900, such vessels were rediscovered as embodiments of a long-lost golden age that was worthy of study and emulation. This “return to the past” (fugu) was part of a widespread phenomenon across all the arts to reclaim the virtues of a classical tradition. An important aspect of this phenomenon was the revival of bronze casting as a major art form. While archaic bronzes were used as containers for food or wine, these so-called “later bronzes” adapted antique shapes and decorative motifs to serve new functions as incense burners, flower vases, and all types of scholar objects. Later Chinese bronzes, however, have long been stigmatized as poor imitations of ancient bronzes rather than being seen as fundamentally new creations with their own aesthetic and functional character. MɕLANGE
@NICOLAS AUVRAY GALLERY 17 JUL - 31 AUG, 2025
Mélange is a bold summer presentation that revels in contrast rather than cohesion. This kaleidoscopic exhibition brings together a diverse group of artists—some from the gallery's roster, others newly invited—for a dynamic exploration of divergent aesthetics. Spanning minimalist steel sculpture, Neo Geo abstraction, evocative landscapes, experimental still life, and digitally manipulated photographic works on industrial materials, Mélange sets each style in sharp relief. Rather than blending, the exhibition invites viewers to engage with the tension, humor, and dialogue that arise when divergent artistic languages collide.

“BLOOM WHERE YOU ARE” is a powerful celebration of feminine strength, presence and perseverance. This cast of artists reminds us that where we are in this current moment, in our communities and in our truths is a beautiful place to be. It invites us to feel deeply connected to our personal gardens, which deserve to be nourished by the bounteous rainwaters’ life has offered and will continue to provide. Comparison holds no weight when recognizing the milestones we celebrate the collective wins a community that continues to stand tall in the face of adversity. Through each artist: Brittney S. Price, Kaylyn Webster, Candice Tavares, Brooke Fierce Bronner and Tyvette Symone unique vision, this activation reflects the light that emerges when women root themselves in their voice, values, and creativity. Candice Tavares holds the textures of Black identity close through her intimate woodwork pieces, while Kaylyn Webster oil on canvas technical details reflects on racial history by capturing familial moments within our diaspora’s living family tree. Tyvette Symone mixed media works which includes crystals, feathers and threads offers meditations on nonlinear growth and transformation as a deeply personal cyclical journey. Brooke Fierce Bronner oil on canvas features multiple small Black figures reclaims inherited imagery to uplift Black joy and pride. Brittney S. Price oil on canvas with vibrant hues of yellow and purple draws from the Adinkra symbol Sankofa to bridge past and future across mediums. Together, their works bloom into a powerful garden.

THE LUNA PARK ELEPHANT @MAKER PARK, STATEN ISLAND
10 JUL 2025 - JUN, 2026
Endurance and color infuse the story of Alice, the elephant that escaped and swam from Coney Island to Staten Island across New York Harbor in June 1904. Visual artist Diane Matyas has created a new public sculpture based on her story. Installed high on a metal container, with the Verrazzano Bridge as a backdrop, the elephant’s movable silhouette extents to 10 feet, and allows visitors to move her like a puppet, as if swimming through the powerful currents of Narrows. By weaving history, shadow puppet movement, and colorful Sri Lankan inspired prints, Matyas presents a theme of hope, buoyancy and endurance- as symbolized by Alice and her swim.
