INTO DEEP WATERS - GABRIELE MÜNTER

Gabriele Münter was a key figure in the development of modern art in Europe during the early twentieth century. At the time, Germany's public art schools excluded women, so she forged her own path. She became a leading figure in the avant-garde art scene in Munich and nearby Murnau, notably contributing to the formation of The Blue Rider (Der Blaue Reiter). This loose and transnational affiliation of visionary artists, writers, and musicians explored how color and form could express deep emotions and spiritual ideas. During World War I, Münter spent time in Scandinavia, prompting a rich exchange with Nordic modernisms and shifts in her artistic style. Discover more

HÉLIO OITICICA

Hélio Oiticica was a groundbreaking visual artist and theorist whose diverse practice spanned sculpture, drawing, painting, installation, and performance. His expansive body of work laid the foundations for participatory art, offering radical insights into abstraction through the lens of social, political, and economic conditions in Latin America and beyond. As a central figure in Brazil’s Neoconcrete movement and a co-founder of the Tropicália movement, Oiticica’s innovative approach emphasized the importance of spatial awareness and embodied interaction. Aseel Sawalha is a cultural anthropologist whose work is informed by ethnographic fieldwork research including projects with Bedouin tribes, urbanites in post-war Lebanon, New York City women artists, and the art scene in Jordan. Blending anthropology and art, Sawalha’s towering media work critiques overconsumption and celebrates books as vessels of memory and dialogue, addressing the future of knowledge and culture amid environmental strain.
