SELF-MADE: A CENTURY OF INVENTING ARTISTS

@AMERICAN FOLK ART MUSEUM 10 APR - 13 SEP, 2026 Self-Made: A Century of Inventing Artists takes a critical look at the historical definition of the “self-taught artist” in the United States from the early twentieth century to today. The exhibition examines how artists without academic training have depicted, conceptualized, and identified themselves on their own terms. In doing so, it aims at challenging reductive, long-standing narratives that have cast these artmakers as amateurs or isolated geniuses working out of time, without lineage, influence, or artistic networks. OJO DE AGUA - HUGO TORO @PERROTIN 10 JUNE-31 JULY, 2026 Perrotin New York is pleased to present Ojo de Agua, the gallery’s first exhibition with Franco-Mexican artist Hugo Toro and the artist’s first presentation in the United States. Toro navigates the space between reality and imagination, painting landscapes that reveal stories that have shaped his identity, whether from his own life or his ancestral lineage. Across this new body of work, water appears as the main source of inspiration, painted in melancholic shades that reflect the element itself and its ability to reflect light, memory, and emotion. HOLE FOLDS - ANNA IALEGGIO @ORTEGA Y GASSET PROJECTS 12 JUN - 16 AUG, 2026

Ortega y Gasset Projects is pleased to present HOLE FOLDS, a site-responsive solo installation in The Skirt by artist Anna Ialeggio, co-curated by Annamariah Knox and Leeza Meksin. HOLE FOLDS is composed of mediated image sculptures, ceramic objects, and sound. It brings together pieces from three distinct series of work which take contrasting approaches to intimately related subjects and themes: exploration of the personal archive of Ursula K Le Guin (with permission from Le Guin’s estate); long-term involvement in sites of prairie and meadow rehabilitation; the aesthetics and politics of repair as a framework for art-making.

ETERNAL FLAME FOR SCOTT BURTON - OSCAR TUAZON @ST. VINCENT'S TRIANGLE, NEW YORK CITY ON VIEW JUNE 20, 2026 The New York City AIDS Memorial is proud to present Eternal Flame for Scott Burton, a major new public commission by celebrated contemporary sculptor Oscar Tuazon (b. 1975, Seattle, WA), as a centerpiece of the organization’s 10th-anniversary programming. The project reimagines and creatively readapts the final public installation of sculptor and performance artist Scott Burton (b.1939, Greensboro, AL, d. 1989, New York, NY), commissioned by the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs’ Percent for Art Program for the Sheepshead Bay fishing piers. The work will be installed at the New York City AIDS Memorial at St. Vincent’s Triangle for one year. Discover more
