CHARLES BURCHFIELD: ELEMENTAL @WHITNEY MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART
22 OCT, 2026 - 31 JAN, 2027 Over the course of five decades, Charles Burchfield (1893–1967) made watercolors that depict what he called the “tremendous force of nature.” These works reveal his keen attention to wildflowers and woodlands, insects and songbirds, weather in all its temperaments and the changing seasons. He found artistic inspiration and a sense of spiritual renewal in the countryside around his childhood home in Salem, Ohio, as well as in Gardenville, New York, where he lived for over forty years. Frequently painting outdoors (en plein air), Burchfield used a dry-brush technique, in which only a small amount of water is applied to the paintbrush, to create watercolors with saturated color and jagged lines suggestive of nature’s dynamic energy.

ALEXANDER KALETSKI - CARDBOARD CHAPEL @ANNA ZORINA GALLERY
22 OCT, 2026 - 05 DEC, 2026 Anna Zorina Gallery is pleased to announce Cardboard Chapel, a solo exhibition by Alexander Kaletski that includes a fifty year retrospective of his painting on cardboard. The title draws from the Sistine Chapel as a monumental example of how patronage of the arts has been used to shape and disseminate ideas, beliefs and stories throughout history. Kaletski considers how this powerful force operates today and he finds it in the marketing that surrounds us. Nowadays, financial support funds the creation of logos, packaging, and taglines that carefully construct narratives designed to make products recognizable, desirable, and memorable. Discover more

CLOUDS - OLAF BREUNING
08 OCT, 2026 - 31 MAR, 2027 Olaf Breuning’s installation Clouds towers nearly 35 feet above Doris C. Freedman Plaza. Held aloft among the trees of Central Park by rudimentary steel supports, the six bright blue clouds are made of polished and painted aluminum and were cut to match a hand drawing by the artist. Calling to mind the set design of a school play or childlike drawings of the sky, the idea for this work is inspired by one of the artist’s staged photographs. For this earlier work, Breuning used cranes and cherry pickers to raise large blue drawings of clouds high in the air, creating a momentary scene to be captured by the camera. Discover more
