A GRAND SWEEP - HELEN FRANKENTHALER

@MUSEUM OF MODERN ART I MOMA 25 OCT, 2025 - 08 FEB, 2026

Describing her painting Chairman of the Board (1971), Helen Frankenthaler said that the work “was about a grand sweep. I had the basic idea in my head—I knew how the lines would dance in. I felt sure of myself.” This statement speaks to the artist’s ambition to paint on a monumental scale, and her confidence in doing so, two decades after her breakthrough moment in the Abstract Expressionist scene of midcentury New York. At the same time, the phrase—a grand sweep—also speaks to the expansive arc of her long career and its continuous innovations. Discover more

SPECTRAL EVIDENCE

@THE SHIRLEY PROJECT SPACE 24 OCT - 07 DEC 2025

The Shirley Project Space presents Spectral Evidence, a group exhibition that asserts the gradient as a language of transition, an investigation of light, and a reflection of how perception slips between the known and the indeterminate. The 8 artists whose work composes Spectral Evidence are engaged in practices that converge on the gradient as both subject and method. Color and light become tools not to define form, but to dissolve it—transforming mass into vapor, edge into atmosphere, and image into a trace of perception. Historically, shifts in value have been used to create volume and shadow; here, they eliminate weight and soften the natural world into spectral evidence of its presence. The result is artwork that hovers between abstraction and recognition. The gradient expresses order in nature, optical vibration, and the fleeting conditions of seeing. The artworks are meditative, optically charged, and buoyant, where color is both the subject revealed and the revealing agent itself. Though their approaches differ, the artists in Spectral Evidence all share a disciplined precision of craft paired with an openness to intuition. Each work requires patience and sensitivity, yet none feels labored; instead, they unfold with a calm inevitability, like time marked in color.

MAGIC GRASSHOPPER - YVETTE MAYORGA @TIMES SQUARE 15 OCT - 02 DEC, 2025

This fall, a new mode of transportation is arriving in Times Square. Featuring an opulent carriage drawn by carousel-style horses and loaded with 90’s nostalgia, artist Yvette Mayorga’s Magic Grasshopper is a 30-foot-long kinetic sculpture carrying critical narratives of migration, feminized labor, and colonial histories. Designed to metaphorically transport viewers across borders and historical eras, the pink-hued fantastical vessel is also a tribute to the physical and personal journeys undertaken in pursuit of the American Dream.
