Studio Museum in Harlem – Artists in Residence 2018 - 2019

While The Studio Museum in Harlem is constructing a new building on the West 125th Street, MoMA PS1 will be presenting the annual ‘Artists – in Residence’ exhibition, in partnership with the Museum of Modern Art.

This year’s exhibition, ‘MOOD’, explores place and time, and their impact on the American identity, culture as well as the past and the present, by using the often trending on social media platforms ‘#Mood’ – used to describe moments.

The exhibition will be featuring works by Allison Janae Hamilton, Tschabalala Self and Sable Elyse Smith. ‘MOOD’ seeks to showcase the artist’s different perceptions of the present day life in the U.S.

Allison Janae Hamilton’s Immersive Installation.

The installation explores spirituality and mysticism that is tied to the Old South America. The installation addresses the enduring of racial violence and economic exploitation in the South.

Tschabalala Self’s new series.

The large-scale mixed-media addresses the street life in Harlem by bringing out vibrancy and energy of Harlem into focus.

Sable Elyse Smith’s sculptures two-dimensional works.

Smith’s works address the injustices of mass imprisonment by putting focus on social history.

‘MOOD’, Artists – in Residence will be on view as from 9th June through 8th September 2019.
